Marseille is made up of 111 neighbourhoods in 16 arrondissements. To put rents in perspective, Marseille is around 30% less expensive than Paris, 20% less expensive than Nice and 15% less expensive than Lyon.
Where to live?
Family neighbourhoods: Longchamp, in the fourth arrondissement, is far from the hustle and bustle of the city, yet close to all the amenities. The Prado, Paradis and Michelet districts, in the eighth arrondissement, are aimed at families, with green spaces and a “golden triangle” of primary and secondary schools.
Upscale: The 7th arrondissement gives you the impression of living in a provincial village, right in the heart of the city. The most sought-after districts of Roucas Blanc and Bompard offer breathtaking views of the Mediterranean along the Corniche.
Bobo Chic: Cours Julien is undoubtedly the home of Marseille’s hipster community. Once a forbidden zone, the Cours Julien is now the heart and soul of Marseille’s nightlife. Near Cours Julien is Place Jean Jaurès, known as La Plaine, which is just as hip as its neighbour.
In full development: Le Panier, the city’s oldest district, has been lovingly restored. Today, it’s the epicenter of Marseille’s cultural movement, home to the MuCEM, the Vielle Charité and numerous artists’ studios, while retaining its historic character.
